Civil Defense Showcases Cutting-edge Equipment at the UAE Innovation Week

The General Command of Civil Defense at the Ministry of Interior took part in the UAE Innovation Week activities, by hosting a pavilion at the exhibition held at Rabdan Academy in Abu Dhabi. The pavilion featured the latest innovations in the field of civil defense, and falls in line with the efforts to support creativity and instill the culture of innovation in the civil defense’s staff members.

A wide array of innovative equipment and devices created by Emirati nationals were displayed at the exhibition, and aimed at promoting the technical and professional aspects of civil defense work. They include: a reconnaissance aircraft dubbed the "Flying Scout"; the "First Responder" device; the world’s first aircraft to fires in towers and high-rise buildings; as well as the "Maritime Rescue Aircraft”. The innovations also included a power wheelchair that provides prevention and safety to people with special needs.

Colonel Dr. Jassim Mohammed Al Muthreb, Head of the Strategy Department at the Civil Defense General Command, said that participation in the UAE Innovation Week reflects the Civil Defense General Command’s keenness to support innovation and nurture a culture of innovation. “This is achieved by providing a stimulating environment for civil defense personnel, to promote scientific research channels; adopt development programs with a focus on creativity and build an innovative knowledge-based society to make further achievements and attain the comprehensive development goals coveted by the UAE.


Major Waleed Al Buraiki from the Strategy Department, designer of the Civil Defense pavilion that was highly acclaimed by the public, briefed visitors about the innovations displayed at the exhibition. Dr. Faisal Obeid Al Ayyan, Vice President of the Rabdan Academy, expressed his admiration with the items displayed at the pavilion, as well as the innovations created by civil defense personnel.

Major Saleh Mohammed Harbi, Head of Civil Protection Department at the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense and Warrant Officer Adel Mahmoud Shawqi presented their latest creations; the world’s first firefighting aircraft.

Positioning System

The new firefighting aircraft patent holder, Warrant Officer Adel Shawqi from the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense, said that the plane was designed to fly at high altitudes, and can be wirelessly charged via radio frequency waves. They are intended to ensure better handling of incidents, prompt response to notifications requiring intervention of civil defense, by pinpointing incidents’ locations and selecting the closest civil defense center.

First Responder

Lieutenant Salem Omar Salem from the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense presented the innovative "First Responder", which is a tablet that receives notifications from the Operations Room and identifies the closest and shortest route to the incident site. It is equipped with a remotely-activated system that allows full control of traffic signals to give priority to civil defense vehicles in order to reach the accident site in record time.

People with Special Needs

First Lieutenant Ibrahim Ahmed Al Zarouni from the Civil Defense General Command presented a power wheelchair especially customized to help people with special needs to fight fires in various sites. The wheelchair is equipped with a fire alarm system, a Fire Extinguisher, and an oxygen mask to prevent smoke inhalation. The wheelchair is also fitted with an emergency lighting unit in the event of a power failure, as well as a smart emergency communication unit to allow communication with civil defense bodies.

Flying Scout

First Warrant Officer Hassan Abbas Al Baloushi from the Dubai Civil Defense gave a presentation about ‘Flying Scout’, the aircraft that is operated by a civil defense officer to assess the incident. The aircraft is designed to reduce response time and pinpoint the exact location of the incident.

Maritime Rescue Aircraft

First Warrant Officer Abdulla Issa Al Marri, from the Ajman Civil Defense Department briefed attendees about the ‘Maritime Rescue Aircraft’. The innovative aircraft is fitted with life jackets that are air-dropped to people at risk of drowning, in an effort to keep them afloat pending the arrival of rescue teams.
