Al Rumaithi said that the fight against drugs is of the utmost importance to the higher leadership. The ADP has started to implement several steps to fight and reduce drug abuse, mainly by intensifying social awareness programs, achieving quality performance and doubling the effectiveness of police work methods, to maintain security and support the process of the State’s development in various aspects of life.

The Commander-in-Chief of Abu Dhabi Police called on everybody – individuals, organizations and families – to protect the national gains and maintain the UAE as an example of civilization, advancement and development, in order to achieve a safer and more prosperous life. He called for continued awareness campaigns, mainly those related to protecting children from falling prey to the scourge of drugs. He also encouraged the promotion of the positive mindset needed to refuse drug abuse and equip targeted individuals with the skills to recognize the signs of abuse, the negative effects resulting from falling prey to addiction, and enlighten them about the scourge of drugs and its various dangers.

Al Rumaithi said that the motto adopted this year, “Cohesive Family,” reflects the crucial role of the family in directly affecting the behaviors of children and building their personalities, particularly during adolescence. He stressed that the motto focuses on the role of the family in protecting children from unusual behaviors in general and in particular from descending into drug abuse, since true individual happiness comes from being a part of the family.

Al Rumaithi called upon all segments of society to reinforce community partnership and face the risks from drugs by reaching out to the police bodies, who spare no effort in maintaining homeland security and ensuring the protection of its members. He urged the public to show their interaction and contribution in spreading awareness about the risks of drugs. Drugs also encourage crimes to be committed and  they cause disruptions in the resolve of young people and turn them into a powerless group, rather than a productive and effective force.

He highlighted the ADP’s endeavors to fight illicit drug trafficking and also their efforts in preventing the circulation and spread of this scourge by cooperating and coordinating with bodies at state level; thereby applying the law against anyone who might be tempted to commit trafficking or drug promotion crimes. The General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police is also working at its utmost to fight drug trafficking, in order to safeguard the security, safety and confidence of members of society.

Al Shareefi highlighted the role of the family in protecting children against bad company and pointed out that community awareness has increased for reporting cases of drug addiction, and also for communicating with the relevant authorities. He also said that there are several families who have become aware of the importance of reporting drug addicts, so that the required assistance can be provided and they can be saved from this dark road.

Adding further, he said: “Drug addiction is not the end and it can be treated. Any family with one of its members suffering from addiction should take the initiative and contact the relevant authorities.” He also emphasized that calls are treated in complete confidentiality and do not require the name of the caller, nor will they be asked to reveal their personal details. He stressed the vital importance of a concerted effort from all members of society to report suspected cases without any fear or concern.

Major General Maktoum Ali Al Shareefi added: “A drug addict is viewed a sick person and it is difficult for them to admit the problem and ask for treatment in most cases. Parents must therefore report suspected cases and never cover up for their children, because they think the consequences seem bad.” He also praised the families that have reacted and reported cases concerning their addicted children to the relevant authorities, where regular and weekly checks are carried out to ensure that the patient didn’t return to drug abuse after undergoing addiction treatment.

General Al Shareefi also confirmed that the UAE observes International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking because of the importance of this initiative in spreading awareness among members of the community about the dangers of drugs and the various negative consequences associated with them, which destroy the social fabric of families and communities. He added that the country is considered a forerunner in fighting drugs and controlling their spread using multiple means and methods.

The Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Police highlighted the need to make every effort to protect our societies from this scourge. He also confirmed that young people are considered of the most important element upon which the future of our country rests.
